Read the lid claim literally
Splash resistance, leak resistance and leakproof claims are not interchangeable. Check the complete maker’s wording and how the lid must be closed. For a specific example, YETI states that its MagSlider lid is not leakproof and does not prevent spills. Its size and compatibility list also matters when buying a replacement. Measure the fit
Measure the actual cup holder or available desk/brewer space, then compare the mug’s listed base dimensions, height with lid and handle clearance. Do not rely on a universal cup-holder diameter. A nominal capacity does not tell you the external dimensions. Ask the seller when a listing omits these measurements.
Understand heat-retention claims
Compare the exact capacity and test conditions, including starting temperature, ambient temperature, elapsed time and filling/closure conditions. Zojirushi describes a controlled six-hour test with the vessel upright and filled to the position in its instructions. This is not a promise for every commute or repeated opening. Follow the model’s filling and care instructions
Use the maker’s specified fill level and assembly instructions. Do not fill to the brim to chase heat retention. The Zojirushi SM-SD/SE/SG/SR manual gives a defined headspace and separate filling, beverage and cleaning limits for those models; it is not a manual for every mug. Check dishwasher, microwave and heating restrictions for the exact body and lid.
Compare total purchase cost
Record the selected capacity, lid included, delivered price and replacement gasket or lid availability. Check whether a ceramic-lined listing describes a coating or a separate liner, and read its care instructions rather than assuming a taste or durability advantage.
